i am not worshiping satan

when i came out publicly with my woo, i got a mix of responses but one that remains the loudest is whether or not i have started worshiping satan. i have not, but since so many people were sure of themselves, let’s take a look at those symbols for funsies.

so, satan / the devil / lucifer - we all have heard some variation of this story. his archetype is known mostly through the christian telling. lucifer was the light-bringer, one of god’s favorites. or at least he was until he fell from heaven. stories say lucifer fell because he wanted to be equal to or greater than god and he traversed between heaven and earth without hesitation.

satan comes from hebrew meaning adversary or accuser. it’s basically someone who is your opponent with the goal to obstruct or slander. we also know from previous posts about the devil tarot card that the symbolism represents the binds we keep ourselves in even though we are able to move freely.

keeping all those characteristics in mind, what do modern satanists believe and practice? in the little book of satanism, la carmina shares that most modern satanists don’t believe in the man but the principle stating, “satanists are non-theists. they don’t believe in satan and don’t worship him as a god or a force of evil. we believe in the historical idea of lucifer, a principled rebel angel willing to stand up against arbitrary rules or authority.”

so that gives me pause. if the principle of satanism is essentially question authority and think for yourself, who, exactly is that a threat to? is the fear of lucifer really about danger? or is it about non-compliance?
